Do not utter a word, snicker, chuckle or laugh for that matter. I know you want to. Don’t! It’s all about the fashion and these people sure know how to steal the spotlight. Few (say maybe 2 or 3) ensembles here are so aptly put together they give some of the designers a run for their money while the rest of the lot are…please let’s not even go there. Let’s not. Thank you. *Grabs Popcorn*

Here is what the good people who attended Nigeria’s Arise fashion week wore to the shows. There is way too much drama going on the red carpet for me to even begin to write a review. I would just let you enjoy and see for yourselves.

Day 3
Despite the shortcomings of day one and two, swift rescheduling finally enabled the designers to send collections down the runway on “day three”. At last the overhyped excitement began and the show-goers were treated to African designs first hand; from Kunle Kuddus (Nigeria) to Laquan Smith (U.S) to David David (U.K) to Mai Atafo among others. Perhaps the wait was worth it.
Mai Atafo
Premise: Never one to play softball, Mai Atafo is super daring both as a person and as a designer. Mai captures the aesthetics of spring/summer in the boldest of color and patterns, giving the modern man a mixture of the bright sunny day and picturesque setting of the sun in a single wardrobe collection.
Pro: This collection should appeal to the urban man or woman as the case may be, due to its vibrancy and edginess. The assemblage of bold colors with muted patterns is a backhanded attempt by this designer to create striking silhouettes in a subtle way. Particularly the sequined blazer takes the cake for dare factor. And besides the designs not looking cheap, the stylist gets B+ for effort.
Cons: There’s nothing here we haven’t (necessarily) seen before. The whole blazered looks are a little overplayed, not to mention the hint at color blocking—a 2000 and late trend. If the designer is looking to garner corporate CEO’s and execs as clients, he must be sorely disillusioned. As for the women collection; well, they are kinda beautiful. More ’inspiring’ designs and colors wouldn’t have hurt though.
Opinion: It’s good.
Trend: Maybe beaded tees/sequined jacket for the men. None for the gals.
See collection
