Throwback Africa: Majek fashek – “Send Down The Rain”

Growing up this was one of the songs that was mostly played in my house, i’d go around in my pant nodding my head and trying to sing along in my tiny winy baby voice, chanting “Yaga yaga yaga yo”.

Taking you back to the old school days and digging for songs years before i was born, i bring back to you Majek Fashek, a Nigerian reggae singer and guitarist, who most people my age thnink he is from the Caribbean, due to his kind of music.

Majekodunmi Fasheke has been nicknamed “high priest who does not lie”, “powers of miracles” and “the high priest does not live” over the years. He was highly influenced by Bob Marley, who we can possibly say he sounds like and also the Legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Majek burst into the scene in the early 1980s as a member of a group called Jastix and members of the group were Ras Kimono and Amos McRoy Gregg. In 1988 the band decided to call it quits, then Majek took on a solo career and thrilled everybody with the hit song “Send Down The Rain” that made him win 6 PMAN Music Awards (I wonder what happened to that award fete)

New Song: Ibiyemi & Sound Sultan – ‘True Colour’

Aboriginal Music proudly presents True Colour, the newest release from vocal powerhouse, Ibiyemi, and featuring the “Naija Ninja” Soundsultan.

True Colour, inspired by a conversation between both artistes, is an ideal fusion of Ibiyemi’s unmatched vocal ability and Soundsultan’s undisputed street credibility.

Ibiyemi, who is famous for a body of work characterised by emotionally-resonant lyrics exploring the various dimensions of love, takes a different route with her present offering. “Just like Soundsultan,” she explains, “I’m very passionate about society and about music as a tool for change, so I thought it was time to make a song reflecting this.”

The song was written by both artistes and talks about being true to oneself—with an undertone of social consciousness, coming just in time as it follows the recent strikes and civil protests experienced across the country.

Produced by FLO, True Colour premiered on Friday, Feb 17, 2012 on three different radio stations in Lagos – The Beat 99.9 FM, Rhythm 93.7 FM, and Inspiration 90.9 FM.
