AUTHOR: SheiSheiFunmi Interviews Nathan Wyburn
Nathan Wyburn stole the heart of many with his creativity on the 2011 Britain’s Got Talent. Check out my interview with the British artist below:
Hello Nathan, how are you?
Hello! I’m very well thank you!
Congratulations on making it that far in Britain’s Got Talent, I must say artists and lover of arts out there are very proud of you, before you went on BGT you had a youtube page where you displayed your work with over 10,000 people subscribe to your page, what prompted you to audition for BGT?
I was inspired to try out for BGT due to the success an feedback i was having from my www.youtube.com/wyzynathan channel. The channel had reached 17,000 subscribers and over 3.2million overall video hits before I went on the show. I would daily get positive comments saying I should take my talent further, into tv or out into the big world. When i saw BGT was auditioning in my city, Cardiff, i decided i had nothing to lose and perhaps a lot to gain.
Your kind of art is different in the sense that you go extra mile in creativity, how did you start using other materials in your art work instead of the regular pencil, paint, crayons etc?
I was inspired to use to use unusual mediums to create my work with right after a read that you either “love or hate” simon cowell, which spurred the idea of Marmite (as it is their slogan) on toast. I had for a long time been pondering of new fun ways to create art, as i was growing tired of constantly using just traditional paints & pencils. Then i started experimenting with other foods & materials such as sugar, ketchup, chocolate, candles & snow.
What does art mean to you?
Art to me is my life. It’s the only way to run away without leaving home. It makes me happy, and im
forever great full for the career i’ve been able to have so far. The fact people enjoy or are intrigued my
work is what keeps me going.
You being a part of Britain’s Got Talent, has that changed your life in anyway?
Being a part of BGT has boosted my confidence greatly. I’ve always suffered from nerves with mass amounts of people, getting on that stage took me as a person to the next level, i proved something to myself i never thought i would. This has now started to reflect in my work, my ideas and thoughts are grander, i want to try out more huge projects, maybe with an audience, maybe without, i feel that now the sky is my limit since being on that stage know millions were watching. It’s an amazing platform and experience.
When you are not working and creating something artsy, what do you do?
I’m never “not working” in the sense of my mind is constantly thinking of new ideas for art. I can barely
walk through a supermarket or down the street without spotting somthing and thinking of ways i can manipulate or construct that into art. I don’t believe and artist ever stops working, its a way of life.
Most of your works that I have seen are of celebrities or you making notable personalities out of objects or food, has any celebrity approached you so far to purchase any of the artwork?
No celebrities have approached me to create a portrait for them as of yet. It would be an honour if they did. I’ve has positive feedback on my work from the likes of BGT’s Amanda Holden, Michael Mcintyre, The Hoff, Ant&Dec, aswell as Katherine Jenkins, Justin Bieber & Leon Jackson.
In the next 2years where do you see yourself with your art and creativity?
In the next to years I’m hoping to be continuing experimenting with new idea’s, playing around with my craft, I enjoy learning, I’m constantly trying to learn from others. I have a year left of my Fine Art degree, and then may do a Masters degree on top of that If im not too busy with other work, I have hopes for a tv career, showcasing my work much like I do on my Youtube, that is the ultimate dream.
If you had won BGT, what would you have done with the prize and what creation would you have made for the Queen?
If i had won BGT i would have used the prize money for art materials, maybe get myself a quiet study
somewhere, a new decent camera and kept on creating new Art. At the Royal Variety Performance i would have like to have created the Queens portrait for her. Maybe on Toast with Marmite as this is my trademark medium. Because I did’nt win i decided to create this piece anyway in hopes that her majesty would somehow see it in celebration of her 85th birthday this past weekend. The final piece can be seen on my Youtube.
To artists out there struggling and striving to make their work seen and heard, what advice do you have for them?
To any artists out there struggling, all i can say is don’t give up. Art should be your way of life as it is mine, it should be embedded in your brain. I’ve struggled alot, questioned myself, my career, I’ve spent alot of money, used up a lot of time, but an artist never fails, it is a success to be one.
Thank you for your time Nathan.
